“Just how much mileage can you get out a single loop? Both Pablo Cahn and Cesar Merveille seem to know the answer. If only these guys had turned their talents towards automotive engineering, we might have vastly more fuel-efficient cars by now, and an end to global warming. But we can take consolation, at least, in the heat they bring to the dancefloor.Cahn and Merveille worked together on Cadenza 39; here they each take a side in a friendly contest to see who can go deeper. Right from the get-go, Pablo Cahn’s “Elle” is one of those “yeeeeeah” kind of tracks, frequency-rich and deeply satisfying, with pumping chords as juicy and marbled as slabs of meat. It moves with a skip in its step and a coy little swing that makes the track seem quicker than it really is-perfect for ratcheting up the energy level in any set. For 11 minutes, it just builds and builds and builds atop a single set of chords, with nimble saxophone riffage, rushing harmonic waves, and almost subliminal voices; Cahn works the filters with extreme finesse, leaning into the resonance to create chest-thumping bass.Cesar Merveille’s “FK” begins with a bright, feathery loop of acoustic drums and guitars, maybe even banjos, and lets it spin blissfully, over and over. A sparse piano melody takes the lead, sweetly detached, as though lost in daydreaming; it’s answered by a saxophone solo that drives the momentum joyously forward. It’s a rich, full production, gorgeously textured, but it’s never too full: Merveille balances the elements with rare restraint, drawing out the drama and bringing us gently back to earth at the end.”

Originally started to enable mobilee records to work with a wider breadth of artists, Leena records has become a powerful entity, with an ever growing variety of releases. Sometimes featuring one-off projects, it’s a platform whereby Anja Schneider and Ralf Kollmann can promote music from other producers who are acquainted with the label and whose sounds and talent they admire. Dapayk Solo (Niklas Worgt) is one of said artists, but he is certainly no stranger to the label after his two impressive remixes of Pan-Pot’s ‘Confronted’ on mobilee at the end of last year. Leena017 witnesses Dapayk Solo in full bloom and with space to breathe. A-Side “Berlin Bedlam” builds up layers upon layers of synths, paving the way for a break out of melodic charms that arrive. It’s a cinematic sound scape that could be played at any number of stages over the course of the night. B-Side “Fawlty” is equally as melodic, but certainly fulfills the role of the calm after the storm. Minimal, but with musical flare, it’s the perfect companion. Techno innovators Slam have had a stunningly consistent year and a packed schedule in 2010 and they keep on moving with another new release from their Paragraph imprint. Classic tracks We Doin This Again and Variance are the subject of two quality releases by Julien Chaptal and Gel Abril respectively.
Fresh from solid releases on the excellent Remote Area, Julien Chaptal produces a brilliant remix for Slam continuing his outstanding form in the field. Gel Abril follows suit with an attention grabbing rework of Slams Variance track. Both tracks work perfectly together in the release, which is sure to become a hit with all fans techno and house.
The release begins in classic tech-house style with the percussion, bass and bouncy synth jockeying for position to create an exciting intro which grabs from the outset. The track kicks in with a timely drop followed by a grooving vocal loop. Complimented by skilful percussion, the track has an intensely adorning feel to it, which creates a perfect smoothness for the first half of the release.
The second track quickly builds an enticing contrast for the release. Abril enters us into a mechanical and industrial surrounding by using the harsher, more metallic sounds of the percussion to powerful effect. The rounded sub of the bass keeps the persistence moving from the first track but with a more unsettling vibe. The track continues to surprise with inspired builds and adeptly sampled vocals. This remix of Variance feels almost addictive in nature, and is bound to raise pulses on the dancefloor
